SolarPanelsCost.com exists to help you understand what solar will cost and what it may save, so accuracy comes before speed. These are the rules every page and every number on this site follows.
Every important number has a source
Prices, electricity rates, incentives and rules link to where they came from and show the month they apply to. We prefer government agencies, utility regulators, utilities and official program administrators, and we check secondary sources against primary ones where we can.
Estimates, benchmarks and facts are labeled differently
- Verified fact: supported by a current, authoritative source.
- Industry benchmark: a reported average or range that may not match your home.
- Estimate: a calculated result built on stated assumptions, such as our calculator’s results.
If we cannot verify a number, we leave it out or label it clearly.
No invented savings
Solar is not a good deal for every home. Our calculator is allowed to say that a system may not pay for itself, and it explains why. We never guarantee savings, payback, prices or performance.
Ranges come from data
When we show a price range, it comes from published low and high figures. We do not widen a single number by an arbitrary percentage to make it look more precise.
Data is reviewed on a schedule
Each figure records when it was last checked and when it is due for review. Figures past their review date are flagged for us, and expired figures are not shown as current.
Corrections
When we find an error, we correct the underlying data so every page that uses it updates, record the change, and note the correction publicly if it could have affected a decision. To report an error, email Mark@SolarPanelsCost.com.
Money never changes the numbers
